Annandale Distillery
Founded in 1836 by George Donald, Annandale Distillery is one of Scotland’s most historic Lowland whisky producers. Nestled in the market town of Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, the distillery’s story has been shaped by both triumph and silence. After operating for nearly a century, Annandale closed its doors in 1924, leaving its distinctive red-brick buildings to fall into disrepair. Its revival came in 2007, when Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church purchased the site with the ambition of restoring it to glory. Following years of investment and under the guidance of whisky scientist Dr Jim Swan, Annandale returned to life in 2014, re-establishing itself as a unique voice in Scotch whisky.
What sets Annandale apart is its unwavering commitment to premium quality and authenticity. The distillery bottles only single cask, single malt whisky, ensuring that each release represents a completely individual expression. Using Scotland’s finest barley, carefully managed fermentation, and twin copper pot stills, every detail of production is geared towards character and complexity.
Annandale’s twin house styles reflect Scotland’s heritage: Man O’ Words, an unpeated style named for Robert Burns, and Man O’ Sword, a bold peated whisky honouring Robert the Bruce. Both have won critical acclaim, cementing Annandale’s reputation as a pioneering Lowland distillery dedicated to rarity, individuality, and excellence.
Johnnie Walker at Annandale
The history of Annandale Distillery is closely linked to one of Scotch whisky’s greatest names: Johnnie Walker & Sons. By the late 19th century, Walker’s blends were becoming world-renowned, and the family sought dependable malt whisky sources to secure consistent supply. In 1893, Annandale was acquired by Johnnie Walker, entering a new chapter as part of a blending empire that was beginning to dominate global markets.
Annandale’s Lowland malt, with its distinctive balance of finesse and depth, became a valued component in Walker’s blends. Its spirit contributed both structure and complexity to whiskies that were finding popularity far beyond Scotland. Under Johnnie Walker’s ownership, Annandale thrived for several decades. However, shifting fortunes in the Scotch industry and overproduction led to contraction. In 1924, Annandale was closed, its stills falling silent.
Though mothballed for almost 90 years, the Johnnie Walker era left a lasting impression on Annandale’s legacy. It demonstrated that the distillery was capable of producing whisky of sufficient quality to be part of one of the most iconic brands in the world. Today, that chapter is remembered as evidence of Annandale’s enduring potential—an authentic Lowland malt worthy of a place in whisky history.
Jim Swan – Twin Distillation
Central to Annandale’s modern renaissance is its twin distillation process, shaped by the expertise of the late Dr Jim Swan, often dubbed the “Einstein of Whisky.” When owners David Thomson and Teresa Church set about reviving the distillery in 2007, Swan’s scientific knowledge and industry experience were instrumental in defining the house style.
Annandale’s spirit is produced through Twin Distillation: first in the wash still, then in the spirit still. Both stills were custom-designed under Swan’s supervision to encourage the right balance of reflux and copper contact, factors which profoundly influence flavour. This careful design allows Annandale to craft two distinct whisky characters using the same equipment: the elegant, unpeated Man O’ Words and the smoky, peated Man O’ Sword.
Swan’s influence also extended to cask management. He pioneered the use of innovative STR casks (shaved, toasted, re-charred), alongside high-quality bourbon and sherry oak, to enhance maturation and deliver exceptional depth. Each cask is bottled individually, staying true to Annandale’s single cask philosophy and showcasing the uniqueness of the spirit.
Although Swan passed away in 2017, his impact endures in every drop. Annandale’s whiskies remain a tribute to his vision—whisky that combines tradition, science, and uncompromising quality.
